This
offered item is a New SPORT Magazine, DUMMY No. 1, dated December 5, 1953.
It’s an
exceedingly rare very first prototype for the upcoming August 16, 1954 Sports Illustrated
Volume One Number One First Issue, for circulation. It was issued by Time, Inc. Publishing in very small quantities on a pilot basis to potential readers and advertisers to get feedback opinions on the publication before going to mass public release. It resembles the first Sports Illustrated with identical 8 x 11.5” format, 140 pages plus covers, but lacks the iconic Sports Illustrated Logo. The great advertisements, many in color, were all pulled from stock and not paid copy (noted, as pictured) to indicate what the actual published magazine “look” would be, with lots of color, revolutionary for this era. The articles are timely to winter season, as when magazine was published, including Hockey, Baseball Hot Stove League activities, Jockeys and colorful regalia, reat sports figure profiles of the era, the upcoming Rose Bowl game, NHL Hockey with interesting history and photos, article about the Brooklyn Dodgers hiring Walter Alston (later HOF) as manager, Middleweight Boxing Title Fight (Olson – Turpin), and several interesting reads. It’s pretty easy to see this magazine would be successful once it went “big-time” in eight months!
This is a great piece of rare historic sports memorabilia and well worth bidding on.
