VINTAGE ORIGINAL RARE! ORIGINAL SECOND PROTOTYPE ("DUMMY 2") FOR SPORTS ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE PUBLISHED 4/19/54 “THE NEW WEEKLY SPORT MAGAZINE”
    !!
    DESCRIPTION:
This offered item is a New SPORT Magazine, DUMMY No. 2, dated April 19, 1954.
It’s an exceedingly rare second prototype for the upcoming August 16, 1954 Sports Illustrated Volume One Number One, First Issue for circulation
. It was issued by Time, Inc. Publishing in very small quantities on a pilot basis to potential readers and advertisers to get feedback opinions on the publication before going to mass public release. It resembles the first Sports Illustrated with identical 8 x 11.5” format, 132 pages plus covers, but lacks the iconic Sports Illustrated Logo. The great vintage advertisements, many in color, were real, rather than all pulled from stock as was done in Dummy #1. The articles are timely to spring season, as when magazine was published, including the 29th anniversary of Babe Ruth’s “Big Tummy Ache”, an event that required surgery and greatly impacted the 1925 baseball season where Washington again won the Pennant. Pictures and coverage of new Braves star Bobby Thomson’s disastrous breaking his ankle in spring training, Masters golf won by Sam Snead, reminiscing the end of the St. Louis Browns who became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954. Also included is coverage on the Kentucky Derby, California trout fishing, bowling, National Parks, boxer Bobo Olson, James T. Farrell on early baseball, and lots of other interesting articles, some with terrific color.
It’s pretty easy to see this magazine would be successful once it went “big-time” in four months!
