Description

Hawaii #28a. Carmine Rose: F/VF OG. Scott 0. Beautiful Rich Color. Scarce.. Shipped with USPS First Class.
This is the scarce Carmine Rose variety of Hawaii Scott #28 depicting King Kamehameha IV. It was issued in 1863 as the second printing of this Boston Lithographed issue, first issued in 1861.  This stamp is likely the top right stamp on the sheet with large top and right margins, clear of the design on the left, and just touching on the bottom. You can clearly see the vertically-laid paper, even without light. This stamp has full OG, not common on this issue, with hinging and a few stains on the gum side not showing through. The front has the rich deep carmine rose color seldom found on the #28a. Many examples claiming to be #28a are actually the more common #28 in a stronger shade that the typical pale rose. The pics show both stamps side by side to display the color contrast. NOTE: ONLY THE #28a IS FOR SALE.
Hawaii #28a is a scarce variety rated with Rarity Factor 8 by the IDC Specialized Hawaii Catalog, meaning only 200 known. This copy is one of the few with the extrordinary DEEP CARMINE ROSE color. As such, it is rare. I have placed a low starting price on this stamp valued at 0 in Scott for ordinary.
